Official launch of the O’Shaughnessy Bridge as city gets new landmark

The O’Shaughnessy Bridge which was constructed as part of an initiative to promote walking and cycling in the city was officially launched recently by new Mayor of Galway city, Cllr Terry O’Flaherty, along with Keith Warnock, the vice-president for capital projects at NUI Galway.

Ruane welcomes proposed cycle safety measures

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has welcomed new proposals by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to make cycle safety training a part of the school curriculum for seven and eight year olds in primary schools accross the State. The RSA Road Safety Strategy is also considering proposals to make the wearing of helmets for children under 13 years compulsory, a timely and welcome move according to Cllr Ruane who is chairperson of Smart Travel Castlebar.

Western Lakes Cycling Club’s family fun cycle is happening on Sunday, June 17. Sign on at Cycling Centre, Kilmaine Rd, Ballinrobe at 11am, leaving the Cornmarket at 12pm. This is a 30km (18mile) round trip. Light refreshments in grounds of Ashford Castle where the family can relax in the beautiful surrounds and more refreshments upon return to the Cornmarket. All you need is your bicycle in good working order and your helmet, all children need to be accompanied by an adult.
