Famine commemoration a great success

A successful series of cultural events took place locally in the week leading up to the National Famine Commemoration in Murrisk. The organising committee of these events would like to thank all those who attended the events throughout the week and made voluntary donations to famine relief totalling almost €2,000.

Mayo ACs golden couple Mc Hugh and Conway first home in Craughwell

In the second race of the Galway 5km series held in Craughwell, husband and wife team TJ McHugh and Catherine Conway finished first in the men’s and women’s race. TJ finished in first place with a time of 16.25, just ahead of Timmy Glavey also of Mayo AC with Jason Broderick of Craughwell AC back in third. In the ladies’ race Catherine finished well ahead of Stephine Fahy from Tuam in second place.

As part of the national famine commemoration, Mayo County Library has produced an exhibition on this tragic period of Irish history.

Bye-laws for Murrisk car park were proposed and seconded at the Westport electoral area planning meeting this week, with pay and display to come into effect in the summer months.
