Very little between north Mayo rivals in junior decider

The All Ireland minor championship sponsors have been using the tagline "this is major" as part of their promotion of that grade in recent years and it could quite easily be applied to what is going to happen on Sunday when Ardnaree and Killala meet at 3pm in the Mayo junior final. This all north Mayo battle promises to be an encounter that will be one for the ages. Ardanree have been knocking at the door in the junior championship so hard over the past number of years there is no paint left on it at this stage, but they have just failed to make grade each time, losing finals in 2009, 2011, and 2012. You also have to go back as far as 1971 to find the last time they claimed the title.

Westport United move one step closer to the title

Westport United maintained their four point cushion at the weekend thanks to a facile 7-1 away win over relegated Straide and Foxford Utd. Both Mark McNally and Jamie Fallon bagged braces along with efforts from Pat Fitzgerald and Dave Cameron and an unfortunate own goal. It was plain sailing for the Covies throughout who had built up a comfortable 5-0 interval advantage.

Deputy Michelle Mulherin has welcomed confirmation that the Crossmolina Flood Relief Scheme will be funded as part of the OPW's €430 million capital investment programme. Dep Mulherin said: "This is excellent news, I arranged for Junior Minister Simon Harris to visit Crossmolina and meet with local residents and businesses where he heard first hand the stories of destruction and devastation which visited locals when the River Deel burst its banks in 2006. The need for this scheme is something I have been pressing for some time now and I am glad to say progressing it has been a priority under this Government. The inclusion of this scheme in the Capital Investment Programme by Minister Harris will ensure it is actually delivered and built."

Westport move closer to retaining title

Ballina Town remain hot on Westport United’s heels thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over high-flying Manulla on Saturday night. A first half Dwayne Helly goal was crucial for the north Mayo men in a hugely competitive affair. Westport Utd picked up another three points to maintain their position at the summit of the league thanks to a 3-1 win at home to a stubborn Charlestown Athletic side. David Hoban scored twice with Mikey O'Brien grabbing the third goal for Westport. The only black-spot was the straight red card issued to goalkeeper Gary Cunningham in the 90th minute. Tom Towey tucked home the penalty and it was only a token gesture in the end. That loss also saw Charlestown's relegation to the Premier A for next season sealed.

Good results in tough conditions

Mayo AC runners were in action at various events over the weekend and had top three finishers at Roscommon, Killarney, and Crossmolina. John Byrne finished second in Roscommon Harriers' 10 mile race on Saturday. His 53:53 finish was a great time over this classic distance given his career span, it was just 45 seconds outside his 2010 Craughwell 10 mile personal best of 53:08. A tough windy stretch mid-race cost finishers a good few seconds. Mark Kirwan (Raheny Shamrock AC) was the winner in 52:32. Well done too to Brendan Hession who had a great run to finish 16th overall with a  personal best in 62:15.
