Castlebar Mitchels man Richie Feeney has been handed the number 11 shirt for Sunday’s Connacht Senior Football Championship semi-final against Roscommon in McHale Park. The versatile Feeney will replace the injured Cillian O’Connor who dislocated his shoulder in a club championship match for Ballintubber against Claremorris, the week after Mayo’s opening round victory over Galway in Salthill.

Roscommon’s senior footballers didn’t fare too well against a rejuvenated Tyrone outfit in GAA headquarters last Saturday but such was the performance of the minor side in the curtain raiser that the large primrose and blue following still left with smiles on their faces. This is no ordinary minor team, and whether or not they go on to emulate the heroics of the 2006 side remains to be seen but one thing is for sure - the future of Roscommon football is secure if they can continue to churn out footballers of this quality.

The big talking point following last weekend’s Roscommon u21 semi-finals was the fact that St Brigid’s record breaking run of county titles at this grade had come to an end. Having held the cup from 2002 to 2009 their hopes of adding a ninth successive title came unstuck at the hands of a well balanced Roscommon outfit. Considering the holders could call on 11 of the team that won last year’s decider it was going to take an exceptional performance to beat them.

Galway hurleres will not begrudge Clare’s victory

It was a titantic struggle and a great advertisement for the game. The young hurlers of Galway and Clare slugged it out in the All-Ireland under-21 hurling semi-final at Semple Stadium until finally extra time saw Clare take the honours.
