On December 7 1922, less than eight months after the Kilmilkin battle, Pádraic Ó Máille TD and his friend Sean Hales TD of Cork, walked out of a hotel on Ormonde Quay, by Dublin’s river Liffy. They just had lunch, and were on their way back to the Dáil in Leinster House, a short drive away. Ó Máille, Galway city and Connemara’s first TD, had been appointed Leas Ceann Comhairle (deputy speaker). As they reached their car a gunman stepped forward and opened fire. Marine Institute singing group strike winning note at Choirfactor Competition

The Marine Institute Singers were singing on high after emerging victorious in the inaugural Galway Choirfactor Competition which took place in the Radisson Blu Hotel on Friday April 12. Organised by the Corrib Lions Club as a fundraising initiative for Kilcuan Retreat Centre in Clarinbridge, the event attracted a capacity audience of more than 700 people.

High stakes and high notes as choirs face-off in Choirfactor

An estimated 150 singers are registered to perform this Friday April 12 on the Radisson Blu Hotel’s live lounge stage in the Choirfactor competition - a charity event organised by the Corrib Lions Club. Six entrants spanning the business, health, and sporting sector of Galway will engage in a ‘sing-off’ and all funds gathered on the night will be donated to the Kilcuan retreat and healing centre, Clarinbridge.

Siobhan Halligan (second year, Mount St Michael Secondary School, Claremorris) and Catherine King (second year, Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Crossmolina) are both finalists in the 2013 John West Fantasy Writing Competition – and they are competing against each other in the same category. It is an impressive achievement for both girls as the competition attracted more than 11,000 entries this year.

Athlone IT student in final of student chef comp

Fourteen of Ireland’s most talented student chefs have won a place in the 2013 Knorr Student Chef of the Year competition. Representing culinary colleges and institutes from across Ireland the student chef finalists will travel to IT Tralee on Wednesday February 27 to battle it out for the title of Best Student Chef in Ireland’s premier student chef competition, including James Gumley from AIT.
