The LAMA Community and Council Awards 2016, presented by IPB Insurance and LAMA, took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Northwood Dublin at the end of January. The awards recognise and celebrate community and councils together. They provide a great opportunity to highlight and celebrate the work done within communities and to reward unsung heroes.

The 2016 Mayo Association Galway Annual Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday, February 20 in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill. The 2016 event begins with a private drinks reception for Mayo Association Galway guests at 7pm in advance of the gourmet four course meal with wine which will be served at 8pm sharp. This year’s dinner dance will pay special tribute to the guest of honour, recently nominated Mayo Person of the Year 2016, Tommy Griffith, founder of PEL Waste Reduction Equipment, Balla.

The draws for the Galway intermediate and senior football championships took place in RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta headquarters in Casla on Tuesday.

It was a harsh lesson for Mayo last Sunday as an understrength side were thought a lesson by a hungrier Cork side in round one of the National Football League. Mayo get their National Football League campaign under way on Sunday away to Cork in Páirc Uí Rinn, and for new manager Stephen Rochford it is going to the first major test of his side's credentials in the new season. Rochford will be dealing from a slightly rigged deck when he makes his first team selection, with no players from Castlebar Mitchels available to him, or from Hollymout-Carramore and Ardnaree who have booked their places in their respective All Ireland club finals.

THE GALWAY Choral Association perform Duruflé’s Requiem Opus 9 in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, this Saturday at 8pm, as part of a fundraising concert for Enable Ireland.

The premier cup competition for junior rugby sides in Connacht kicks off this evening, with Claremorris the first Mayo side into the competition taking on Tuam in north Galway at 8pm. The south Mayo team who are operating in Junior 1C this year will face a tough test against the north Galway side who are sitting in third place in the table in the division above them in the league with eight wins from their 10 games.
