Good showings from Mayo athletes in Irish green

Three of Mayo AC's top masters women athletes competed on the Irish team in the 25th Annual British and Irish Masters International Cross Country at Queen's University Playing Fields, Belfast on Saturday last. Three club members in Irish vests is a great achievement.

Ballina four miler this weekend

Sunday will see round eight of the Mayo AC C&C Cellular 2012 Road Race League go to the tap in Ballina. This round of the league will be run over a four mile one lap course. The course will be well marshalled and the final mile will take runners up through the scenic Belleek Park. Race HQ will be at the Ballina AC track and entries will be taken on the day. Entry fee for the race is €20 and includes a T-shirt, the race will start at 3pm, there will be no prize fund for this race as all money will go towards cancer research. All roads lead to Balla for 20th running of Balla 10k

The 20th Balla 10k will take place on July 28 at 7pm. It is the third race in Mayo AC C&C Cellular 2012 Road League. This traditional race has an established place on the calendar and has always attracted runners from the top clubs in the west and further afield. The 10k course has a reputation for being tough but fair, and the same runners come back year after year. As well as the ups and downs, there are straight flat stretches and a fast downhill main street finish. The race open to all. Full details are on www.mayoac.com. This year clubs will compete for team prizes. The combined times of the first three men and women club finishers will count. There will be medals and high viz jackets for all finishers. Refreshments will be served in the Community Centre, while showers will be available in Balla GAA club. Over 150 take part in Ballyhaunis 5k

National medals for Emma Lofus and Hugh Armstrong

Ballina Athletic Club athletes travelled to Sligo Racecourse last week for the even ages and senior cross country championships and acquitted themselves very well. Emma Loftus ran a brilliant race in the u14 girls 3,000m race and finished in ninth place overall out of a field of 130 athletes, and took home a bronze medal in the process. Emma is eligible to run in the same age again next year. Hugh Armstrong, who competed in the European and World Mountain Running championships during the year, competed in the u18 boys 6,000m race and finished in eigth place overall to take home a bronze medal also. Maria Reilly was leading the u12 girls race until she had to pull out due to injury. Bridget Mills ran very well in the same competition, as did Cormac MacDermott in the u12 boys race. The u18 boys team of Hugh Armstrong, Cian Mulrooney, Jonathan Deane, and Ciaran Treacy performed very well and finished in sixth place overall. Roger Barrett was the first Mayo man home in the senior competition when he finished in 32nd place overall. His club mates Michael Canty, Sean Gallagher, and Tommy Neville competed also as members of the Mayo Intercounties Team. The uneven ages and novice championships takes place in the Curragh on Sunday next, December 11.

Connacht title for Hugh Armstrong at Connacht uneven ages cross country championships

The uneven ages cross country championships were held in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, last weekend. Bridget Mills was in great form and won an individual bronze medal for her efforts in the u11 girls’ race and gold with Mayo Intercounties team. Caoimhe Loftus also won gold with the Mayo team. The u11 girls’ team of Bridget Mills, Caoimhe Loftus, Grace Murray, Emily Murray, Finola Collins, and Aoife Egan finished in second place overall in the team event. Bridget and Caoimhe qualified as members of the Connacht team also for the National championships. Grace qualified as a member of the Mayo Intercounties team.
