Charlestown Vintage Run raises €4k for charity

More than 200 vintage tractors, cars, bikes, lorries and trucks took part in the annual Eugene McLoughlin Charlestown Memorial Run in August this year. The event is etched into the calendar at Charlestown coming in as the second largest event of its kind in Ireland. The committee, made up of family and friends of the late Mr McLoughlin, have their eyes set on it becoming the largest event of its kind in Ireland in August 2017.

Last week’s Claudio’s Takeaway Charlestown Athletic FC 50/50 weekly draw winner held in McLoughlin’s Bar, Charlestown was Michael Muldowney, c/o McLoughlin’s Bar, winning €400. Catriona McLoughlin was the winner of the €20 in-house draw. Also, the winner of a a free 12” Claudio’s Takeaway Pizza was Philip Craig. They also gave away two tickets to a Republic of Ireland home international at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin, before Euro 2016 and the winner was Noel Seery.

Two decades on from epic series Garrymore and Charlestown rekindle championship rivalry

Twenty years on from what was one of the most epic battles in Mayo club championship history, when Garrymore and Charlestown engaged in a four game classic in the county senior quarter-final that the south Mayo men finally won after 300 minutes of football, the sides will kick-start their 2015 championship campaigns against each other in Garrymore on Sunday. That series has gone down in folklore in Mayo football and there is even one man who played in that series for Charlestown still lining out today, with Aidan Higgins back for another year with the east Mayo men.

Charlestown 10k takes to the roads next week

The Charlestown 10k will be the fourth race in Mayo AC C&C Cellular 2013 Road League. It takes place at 5pm on Saturday September 7 and will be the first big race of the month in the west. Charlestown is an excellent location on the N5/N17 and easily accessible from all points in the province. The organisers are hoping for a big turnout and their local hero David Tiernan, who runs with Mayo AC, will be heading the challenge. All are welcome to join and run, jog, or walk.
