The town park in Moate is to be named after the late Private Patrick Kelly, who was shot dead at Derrada Woods, Co Leitrim almost 25 years ago.

‘Singers’ occupied our shop premises for 42 years - John Morrissey, ran this business successfully for all these years and then retired. People were then travelling all the way to Carlow and Waterford to source wool, zips, and all their craft needs. Catherine and Helena realised there was a need to reopen this type of business in the central Kilkenny area, but under their new name of 'Deevy's Sewing Essentials'.

Such is the degree of confidence that the young Carlow Kilkenny Fine Gael Senator John Paul Phelan has in his party leader. When speaking to the Kilkenny Advertiser/ Carlow First this week, Senator Phelan spokesperson on enterprise in the Seanad, said that he was extremely confident that the leader of Fine Gael “will be the next Taoiseach and he’ll be damn good too!”

I have always had great respect for the Irish yew tree. Because of its association with sanctuary and protection in mythology, you often see the yew in old graveyards. But its strength and bulk in old age, (it can live for hundreds of years, fertile to the last bearing red berries and new growth every spring), it is also associated with love and protection. It is considered a great gift to have yew in your garden. If you are fortunate to have yew trees of a great age you are doubly blessed. Its branches are traditionally used in the Palm Sunday ritual.

Chique is owned by Sharon Fallon from Hollymount and since opening in October 2008 she has built up a large clientele in her professional skin care and beauty salon, with qualified and experienced therapist Catherine working alongside her.

I brought her a bag of apples on our first ‘date’. Not very romantic, I hear you say. True. And not very generous. Also true (Tesco special offer – one pound for a ‘family bag’). I was merely continuing a tradition. She was Anne Gregory and during her childhood at Coole Park, “every year John Quinn, Grandma’s great friend in New York, used to send a great case of apples to us.” So it is recorded in Anne’s beautiful book Me and Nu, Childhood at Coole. ‘Nu’ was Anne’s sister, Catherine. If you haven’t read Me and Nu, treat yourself to a copy for the New Year. It is still in print after nearly 40 years.

Independent Jack Moran launches campaign
