Mayor launches RehabCare artists exhibition

“Each piece of art on display tells its own story” —the words of Councillor Brendan Henaghan, Mayor of Castlebar, as he opened RehabCare’s art exhibition in the Linenhall Arts Centre. The exhibition which runs until April 6 features a range of paintings and crafts. The works were created by 50 artists, all of whom have an intellectual disability, physical/sensory disability, or mental health needs, and who access the RehabCare resource centres in Castlebar. Entry is free to the exhibition which has been co-ordinated by RehabCare staff member Josephine Killalea and art tutor Emma Gallagher.

Special Olympics table tennis event a big success for Mayo athletes

Special Olympics athletes showed off their table tennis talents at the Regional event held in GMIT, Castlebar recently. Over 60 athletes from Mayo, Galway and Roscommon, Longford competed on the day. Players battled in out over singles and doubles competition throughout the day.

Mayo Youth Orchestra took take centre stage in Dublin

Members of Mayo Youth Orchestra are on the road to Dublin tomorrow, Saturday February 9, to play at the 18th Festival of Youth Orchestras at the National Concert Hall. This special festival has been honoured by inclusion in the Official Cultural Programme for the Irish presidency of the Council of the EU. Minster of State for European Affairs, Lucinda Creighton, will be guest of honour during the afternoon performances at the festival and Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald, will present the Achievement Award for 2013.

Western Care announces Mary O’Rourke for Candlelight Ball

Western Care have announced former politician Mary O’Rourke as the guest speaker for their upcoming Candlelight Ball which takes place on Saturday, February 9. Former celebrity guest speakers at the ball include An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, sports commentator Micheál O’Muircheartaigh and Mary Davis of the Special Olympics. The Candlelight Ball is a solid fixture in the Castlebar social calendar.

Iarnród Éireann celebrates one hundred and fifty years in Castlebar

Iarnród Éireann marked 150 years of the railway’s arrival in Castlebar with an event at the railway station. John O’Mahony TD unveiled a specially commissioned bronze artwork of a steam locomotive to mark the occasion.
