I’ve never had much luck or patience when it came to three hour long epic movies - there’s either far too much to take in or not enough. It takes a brave director, a great screenplay writer, and a few not too shabby actors to pull it off and I have to say Benjamin Button just about did just that.

It’s week six and Operation Alteration is all over for another session and what a programme it’s been. There have been highs - weeks with food diaries looking very healthy and participation at classes and the gym at 100 per cent, and lows - a week where a sore back meant my exclusion from the programme. But over all it’s been a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

The town of Westport was plunged into mourning this week after the death of two men last weekend. On Sunday the body of Noel Gill, who had gone missing in the Dutch city of Rotterdam on November 19, was found. Mr Gill was last seen by a friend in the city between 4am and 4.30pm close to the Erasmus Bridge, near Churchillplein in the city centre. A large scale appeal to help find Mr Gill was launched by his family and friends online including a website and Facebook appeals in their effort to locate him. Mr Gill had been in Rotterdam for over a year at the time he went missing, but would return to Mayo regularly to see his wife Cindy and their two children.

A young Westmeath girl who was seriously injured in a fall at a ski resort in Austria is due to return home tomorrow.
