Our Leaving Cert students are entering a different place

The students who are this morning embracing the fact that their school days are over are facing into a world very different from that of their predecessors of the past decade. Exam celebrations were at the time often excessive and the thought that there might not be an opportunity for them in whatever sphere they chose was not one that was uppermost in the mind.

NUI Galway offers Leaving Cert students a second chance with special maths exam

The College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway has announced details of a special entrance maths examination which will give students a second chance to pursue a career in engineering. The exam, which takes place on Wednesday August 24, is for students who achieve the CAO points for an undergraduate engineering degree course at NUI Galway but who have not met the obligatory maths requirement.

Record increase in numbers applying to NUIG

The CAO's latest figures for third level applications show that NUI Galway’s popularity among Leaving Certificate students as their first choice for university continues to grow for the third consecutive year. The university has seen a further increase of almost 10 per cent in the number of students selecting NUIG as their first choice institution through the change of mind and late application process. NUI Galway is now in the top two universities for growth in first preference applications through both application processes. Over the past three years, first preference applications for undergraduate degrees at NUI Galway have increased significantly as the university’s popularity continues to soar.

Man was selling drugs to help his mother out financially

Judge Mary Devins adjourned her decision against a Claremorris man who pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for sale and supply this week. Julius Silkaitis, 18 Claremount Manor, Knock Road, Claremorris, pleaded guilty to the charges in court and told the court that he was selling the drugs to make some money so it would be easier on his mother, who was supporting herself and him on social welfare at the time. Garda Ciaran McGrath told the court that he carried out a search on Silkaitis’ home on December 9 2009 at 18 Claremont, Claremorris. He found 18.65gms of cannabis herb divided into 22 bags in the defendant’s room with a value of €400.

NUI Galway to host mature student drop in day

NUI Galway will host a drop-in-day for mature students on Thursday January 27 in AM205, the Arts Millennium Building in the university. The event is open to anyone who would like information on the mature student application process from 10am until 4pm.

Gain for a qualification in hairdressing

As the Leaving Cert results arrived and CAO points were announced, the Irish College of Hairdressing in Galway saw a major rise in requests for information on its website for the College's City and Guilds international qualification in hairdressing. The course starting in September is now almost full and the first offer for places in the January course already issued to a number of students.
