Mayo building firm director liable for €1.6m

A Mayo-born director of a building company which went into voluntary liquidation has been held personally liable for €1.6 million of its debts, the High Court has ruled, as reported in this week’s The Irish Times.

Cuts in grants to hurt Mayo sporting organisations

Mayo clubs and sporting groups will be feeling the pinch of the economic downturn this year with the news that that Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism will not be providing any funding through the sports capital grant programme in 2009. In 2008 at total of 28 groups in Mayo shared in a pot of €1,380,500 in funding for projects which spanned from €2,000 to All Stars Boxing Club in Ballinrobe to €250,000 which was given to the Connacht Branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland. In 2007 more than €2.5 million in grants was handed out around County Mayo.

New windfall tax not to apply to all

Sites for one-off housing with planning permission and land that is subject to a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) will not be affected by the new windfall tax that is being introduced by the Government, according to Cllr Andrew McGuinness.

Convicting illegal dumpers a priority of Mayo County Council

The issue of what happens once illegal dumping is reported to the council raised its head at this week’s monthly meeting of the Castlebar electoral area committee. Fine Gael Councillor Henry Kenny brought up the issue asking: “I have reported illegal dumping myself on a number of occasions, I’d just like to know what the follow up is on this dumping, do they come along and remove the materials that are dumped and what do they do after to investigate who is doing the dumping?” Cllr Kenny’s enquiry was backed up by Labour party Cllr Johnny Mee who told the meeting, “I agree with Cllr Kenny, there is an ongoing problem in this area where rubbish is just being dumped by people in the town. It’s a sad sight and it’s an appalling behaviour that has to be clamped down on by the council and the public in general.”

Galway man passed cheques which bounced in Ballinrobe

A Galway man was convicted and fined €300 and ordered to hand over €500 compensation for passing two cheques that bounced at Ballinrobe District Court. Mark Keane pleaded guilty to the charges in court, in a case which his solicitor Cathy McDarby said had “no malice in it”.

ICOS President Pat McLoughlin has been elected as a vice-president of the EU Agricultural Co-operatives Confederation COGECA. The Confederation represents the interests of some 40,000 farmer co-operatives employing some 660,000 people and with a global annual turnover in excess of three hundred billion euro throughout Europe.
