Cyprus has been described as ‘the island of all seasons’ and rightly so. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and enjoys 340 days of sunshine per year. Winters are mild and short with temperatures varying from cool along the coast to cold in the Troodos Mountains where there is seasonal skiing.

Birmingham is somewhere that I hadn’t thought about visiting in the past, for a couple of reasons.

Mr Scollan has also argued that the report supports the status quo which sees the State airports cushioned by taxpayer handouts and by imposed levy payments from competing independent airports, thereby ensuring that an inefficient, inequitable and ultimately taxpayer-supported aviation system will continue.

It has been a somewhat depressing period over the past few weeks for followers of the Tribesmen, broken only by the performance of the city’s rowers in international competition and the selection of Paul and Olive Hession for the World Championships, (and only temporarily postponed for The Green and Red until the inevitible mauling by Kerry).

The Vodafone C& C Cellular Mayo AC Open Road League continues on Sunday October 11 with race seven of the nine race series. The Terry Fox four miler takes place at Ballina and is a one lap course starting and finishing near the track at Belleek Park. The Terry Fox run takes place annually at venues all over the world in support of the Terry Fox Foundation which raises funds for cancer research in memory of a brave young Canadian. The race will not have a prize fund as all money raised on the day will go towards the Terry Fox Foundation. The race starts at 3pm. Entries will be taken from 1.30pm at track clubhouse. Local man Michael Rice and his team of helpers have organised this race at Ballina for the past 17 years. Mayo AC is happy to support the great work done by Michael in his fund-raising effort. Mayo AC had five runners in the masters categories at the Gerry Farnan cross country race . In the women's three mile event Breege McHale finished in fourth place in the o40 category and Ann Murray was seventh in the o45 section. In the five miles race, Dublin based Seamus Gaughan returned from recent fitness problems to finish seventh in a very competitive o55 category. Robert Malseed was second o35, as was Tom Hunt in the o60. Computer problems meant there was no results on the day, but it was confirmed that Breege McHale, Robert Malseed, and Tom Hunt qualified for the Irish team to go to the B&I Masters cross country in Birmingham, thus maintaining Mayo AC's excellent representation in this event in the past few years. Seventeen-year-old Daniel Murray (Ballina AC) ran impressively in the Junior section over five miles and his 27.10 time put him in the top 12 juniors and top three u18s in the race.

The low winter sun chased the shadows and raced across the fields around the village of Hollymount as the 44rd Annual Road Races took place on Sunday. Once again they were excellently organised by Sean Reilly and his team. It was an emotional day for him and his family as the local community and the racing community from near and far assembled in November sunshine to remember his brother Tom. Tom Reilly's widow Jill, and her daughter Siobhan unveiled a plaque set into the simple stone wall adjacent to the finishing line. It is inscribed 'In memory of Tom Reilly sportsman and scientist 1941-2009'. A chestnut tree was planted beside it by Tom's childhood friend, local man Paddy Connolly.
