Communities in Mayo join forces to celebrate Bealtaine

Age and Opportunity has announced an exciting line-up of Mayo-based events which will take place during the month of May as part of Bealtaine 2016, Ireland's annual festival of creativity as we age. Now in its 21st year, Bealtaine continues to be embraced by the Mayo community with many arts and cultural events organised by local libraries, arts centres, care settings, galleries, active retirement groups, and community groups across the county.

Fire parade, music, and visual arts at Uisneach

This May bank holiday weekend will see Ireland’s oldest Bealtaine celebration on the Hill of Uisneach on Saturday, May 2 from 2-11.30pm. The Uisneach Fire Festival’s unique ceremonial fire parade at dusk will be the centrepiece of the day-long celebration which will feature artisan foods and crafts, holistic healing, a heritage talks tent, re-enactments, and guided heritage walks. The main stage area will feature a full music programme including the Máirtín O’Connor Band and Mary Coughlan. A special Clarke’s Bar Tent will also feature a traditional music programme throughout the day.

The organisers of Bealtaine are delighted to announce the line-up for May 2013, which will see a fantastic variety of theatrical, cinematic, craft, photographic, choral, dance and other events taking place across Westmeath. The annual Bealtaine festival gives people a chance to celebrate creativity as we age, inviting them to ‘Grow happy!’ - the theme of this year’s festival.

Bealtaine Festival - celebrating creativity as we age

Throughout the month of May, Áras Inis Gluaire will be hosting events to mark the national annual Bealtaine festival. All these events are free and are an opportunity for older people to get involved in their local arts centre. The festival kicks off on Wednesday May 8 at 3pm when they will open their art in the afternoon showcase. This is a collection of paintings by a group of men who have been painting in the centre every Monday afternoon. Go along and see these fantastic pieces. Teas and coffees will be provided and Micheal S Togher will lead a singsong afterwards. Also on May 8, an exhibition by Amanda Jane Graham will open entitled A Tribute to the Irish Community, Montana. This fascinating exhibition will include a walk around talk by the artist about her work which has an interesting historical element.
