Chambers announces his decision not to run in local elections

Newport Fianna Fáil councillor Frank Chambers has announced that he will not be contesting the forthcoming Mayo County Council elections on June 5, despite having received the Fianna Fáil nomination for the Westport electoral area. Cllr Chambers made the announcement at a meeting of the Michael Kilroy Fianna Fáil Cumann.

Harrington back behind bars

Shell to Sea protester Maura Harrington was sent back behind bars for a further 14 days for failing to pay fines relating to her imprisonment in March. At the March court sitting in Belmullet, where Harrington denied claims that she slapped a member of An Garda Síochána during a protest at Pullathomas Pier on June 11 2007, she was sentenced to 28 days in prison.

Erris players to mark Synge centenary with Playboy performance

The Playboy of the Western World, by John Millington Synge, is arguably the Irish playwright’s greatest masterpiece. In order to mark the centenary of JM Synge’s death – he died, aged 37, on March 24 1909 – the Erris Players, under the direction of Bridie Quinn, will be staging a powerful performance of this noted drama in Belmullet and in Bangor Erris. Interestingly, this is not the group’s first performance of the play – they first staged it 17 years ago and that very successful production is still recalled by local actors and audiences alike.

One year disqualification for allowing child to stand in car

At Belmullet District Court on Wednesday a Latvian man who was not wearing his seatbelt was disqualified and was also fined for allowing his child to be unrestrained in a car.
