The first two races in the Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular 5km Summer Series took place over the past few days with races in Foxford and Ballyhaunis. In the first race in the series in Foxford there were 160 competitors taking part. 

Summer series takes to the roads this month

Mayo AC have announced the details of the eighth installment of the Vodafone Mayo AC 5K Summer Series which will get under way in just over a fortnights time in Foxford. The five race ‘no frills’ series is open to all local athletic clubs and fitness groups are very welcome. The courses are AAI measured/permitted, well marshalled with finish line time clock and chip timing. All races will start at 8pm on Tuesday evenings.

It was never going to be easy for Ballyahunis to become the first Mayo side to claim the Connacht Intermediate Hurling Championship and when Keith Higgins found the back of the net for their second goal two minutes into injury time they almost did it. It has been a busy few weeks for the Ballyhaunis hurlers and it is about to get busier again. On Sunday, they face into their fourth game in 14 days, having draw the Mayo Senior Hurling Championship final with Tooreen last Sunday week, before they eventually got the better of them in another Titanic encounter in Ballyhaunis last Sunday by just three points. They followed that up on Wednesday evening with a 1-12 to 0-9 win over Roscommon champions Oran in the semifinal of the Connacht Intermediate Championship in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence and now on this coming Sunday, they face Galway champions Ahascragh-Fohenagh in the final of that competition at 2pm in Athleague.

Ballina and Ballyhaunis serve up great contests

Since beloved coach Brian O’Donnell’s untimely death in 2014, Ballina Boxing Club has honoured his memory with this annual showpiece.This year, boxers from Mayo, Kildare, and Tyrone were invited and each gave terrific performances befitting the occasion. The technical highlight was a light-fly (49kg) contest between Martin McDonagh and Willie Casey (Athy).
