Good showing by Mayo in tidy towns

When Westport first won the Tidy Towns competition just after the turn of the century the win was greeted with huge celebration. Last Monday evening the news that the town had won the overall competition for the third time this decade, and for the second time in three years, was celebrated with as much gusto by all involved.

The announcement that 80 refugees from Congo will be settling in Ireland next year has moved Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony and his party colleague Cllr John Cribbin to call for the Government to fulfil its promises to develop the infrastructure of Ballyhaunis to enable the town to deal with the hundreds of asylum seekers currently living in the town.

According to the AA route finder only 4.9 miles separate Tooreen and Ballyhaunis from each other. On Saturday afternoon Tooreen will make that short trip to face their neighbours in the county senior hurling final at 4pm. Tooreen were the standard bearers of Mayo hurling for a long time before the past decade which has seen Ballyhaunis steal their mantle as hurling kings of Mayo. The Ballyhaunis men will be appearing in their seventh final in succession and will be looking for their fifth title in six years, their four in a row bid was stopped last year by James Stephen’s Ballina, who themselves were dispatched from the competition by Tooreen last weekend in a semi-final replay.

Mayo sides need to pick up the pace after the break

It’s must win time for all three of the Mayo clubs in the Connacht Junior League this weekend. After the last few rounds have seen them all stumble out of contention for the title and left them scrapping around to stay in the race for All Ireland Junior Cup place for next season. And unless there is a draw one of the three Mayo sides’ losing run will continue into the next round of fixtures. This weekends round of games features a crunch all Mayo derby in north Mayo where Ballina will host Westport.
