As the first shipment of emergency water supplies to Inis Meaín began yesterday a Galway West TD has called on the Government to quash water charges for islanders who have been subject to water shortages and rationing throughout the summer.

Two areas of Galway are suffering from a lack of water this week, with residents and businesses in Newcastle and two of the Aran Islands affected by restrictions and interruptions in supply.

Water levels in the reservoirs on the Aran islands of Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr are reaching critically low levels with locals fearful that supply will run out by the August Bank Holiday weekend.
