One of the most enjoyable events on the Galway sailing calendar starts today.

The RNLI has opened its most westerly shop in Ireland on Inis Mór to raise vital funds for the charity dedicated to saving lives at sea.

Every community and society has gems that it has to protect. Whether they be social, cultural or geographic, there are aspects of life for which future generations will chastise us if we let them falter or disintegrate in any way.

On the 1651 map of Galway, Bohermore is shown as running from The Green (Eyre Square) to the present Cemetery Cross where the ‘Old Gallows’ was located. There was also a gallows ‘where justice is executed’ near the Green. To the left and right of Bohermore, the land was known as St Bridget’s Hill and the region around Prospect Hill was known as Knocknaganach (Cnoc na Gaineamh), the Sandy Hill.

Knowledge of how to read the sea is a rare gift. Patrick Oliver, one the last of the Claddagh fishermen, who once had a fleet of 200 boats in the bay, carries on the family tradition successfully catching lobster and crab. Patrick knows the local coastal waters like few others. When on Thursday morning August 13 2020, he heard that the two young women, Sara Feeney (23) and Ellen Glynn (17), who had set out from Furbo beach on their inflatable paddle boards the evening before, were still missing, he phoned his brother Dave who had been out all night on the Galway lifeboat searching.

Clifden RNLI’s new all-weather Shannon class lifeboat arrived to an emotional welcome from crowds gathered in the Connemara community to see it complete its week-long voyage home from the charity’s All Weather lifeboat centre in Poole. The lifesaving vessel is the first ‘Launch a Memory’ lifeboat to be put on service in Ireland. The St. Christopher carries the names of over 10,000 people on its hull, which were put there by members of the public through a special ‘in memory’ fundraising initiative for the charity.

Doolin Ferry Co. ‘Cruise Company of the Year Ireland’, has set sail for the summer season, with their state-of-the-art ferries operating once again from Doolin Pier to the Aran Islands. Passengers can also opt to board a Cliffs of Moher cruise, or the thrilling Seafari experience, which was introduced in 2021.

Galway Community College, (GCC), GRETB is welcoming an Erasmus+ delegation of 30 students and four teachers from a school in Croatia and a school in Spain, to Galway city this week. The students are here as part of the endangered species and biodiversity project, a climate change research study in the European Union, that all three schools have been working on.
