A local paramedic is hoping to do a great service for his mother Maureen by appearing on her behalf on the National Lottery Winning Streak game show on RTE One this Saturday (March 3).

Coole Park has a rich cultural heritage as the former home of Lady Augusta Gregory and the centre of the Irish Literary Revival. Its present status as a nature reserve is due to the global importance of its extensive wetland system and woodland which borders it. Figures from COPE Galway’s Annual Report 2015 show an alarming rise in the number of people facing homelessness in Galway. One of the most striking features is the changing demographic of what was considered to be a ‘typical’ homeless person. Ann*, a well-spoken grandmother found herself in the shocking position of becoming homeless in her late 50s.

Castlebar came to a standstill on Wednesday afternoon and the business community shut their doors as the funeral of Private Ben Garrett, Kilnock, Breaffy, Castlebar, passed through the streets of the town in a military cortege before his burial in the New Cemetery in Castlebar. Private Garrett's body was found last Sunday in Galway following an 18 day search that saw hundreds of people scour the city and its surrounds on a daily basis looking for him after he was reported missing.

Times are tough for many living in our community. But the community really does care, and that care often turns to support for the work of COPE Galway, which is a local organisation working with a range of people such as those affected by homelessness, women and children experiencing domestic violence, and older people living independently in their own homes.

Galway bade farewell to its favourite golfing son Christy O’Connor jnr this week when thousands of mourners paid their last respects to this iconic sporting hero.
