All roads lead to Hollymount this weekend

For 45 years now the Hollymount road race has been the highlight of the athletes’ diary in the winter season. All roads again will lead to Hollymount this Sunday November 7 for the 45th Annual Road Race. Hollymount is renowned because of its international appeal with a huge contingent of runners again making their way from the UK and further afield. Things get under way on Sunday at 12 noon with a Fit4Life 8k fun run and walk, at 1pm the u17 boys and girls’ 3k race will go to the start line. Half an hour later the senior women’s 3km will start, with the main event the men’s international 10k going under starters orders at 2pm.

Mayo AC ladies run in European Cup on Sunday

It will be another landmark day in the history of Mayo AC on Sunday next when the club’s women’s team are Ireland’s representatives in the 24th European Women’s Road Race Interclubs Championship in Portugal. The race, held over a distance of 15km, takes place in Torres Vedras about 30 miles outside Lisbon. The Mayo AC team consists of five members, Catherine Conway Mary Gleeson, Colette Tuohy, Kathy Connolly, and Chris Gallagher, all of whom have been in outstanding form on the road racing circuit in recent times and are looking forward to rubbing shoulders with the leading club runners from around Europe. Last year’s event was held in France and was won by Maratona club de Portugal while ACS Moscow were runners up

Ballina AC man runs personal best at Berlin marathon

Ballina AC runner Scott Walkin completed the Berlin marathon last weekend in a personal best time of three hours three minutes and three seconds. It marks the culmination of many months’ preparation that paid off on the day. Scott is an integral member of the collective training sessions on Belleek track that have contributed in no small way to the improvement in running times for many club members. These training sessions continue every Thursday starting at 7pm, even in the dark winter months when the track lights come into operation. With Scott having achieved the qualifying time for the world famous Boston marathon with this run, there could be a sizeable contingent from the club travelling to Boston next April.

Mayo AC ladies’ team selected to represent Ireland at European championships

The Mayo AC ladies team have been rewarded for their good performances this year by being selected to take part in the 24th European road race inter club championships in Torres Vedras, Portugal. The event, which will take place on Sunday October 17 over a 15km course, will have top athletic clubs from all over the continent taking part. The Mayo AC team which will compete in the event will be finalised over the coming weeks.

Mayo athletes perform well at Phoenix Park 10 mile

Mayo AC members recorded some great performances at the annual Frank Duffy 10-míle road race in the Phoenix Park recently which attracted more than 6,000 competitors. John Byrne finished ninth overall in a time of 53.44, while Paddy O’Toole finished in 59.46 and Kevin Mellett, who has recovered from recent injury, came home in 62.27. Catherine Conway ran an excellent race finishing fourth in the senior woman in 62.10, while Paula Prendergast clocked 70.02. Caroline Conway ran strongly to cross the finish line in 75.13.

Westport 5k run and walk is coming up soon

As part of the Westport Get Out There adventure festival, the Westport community and Mayo Sports Partnership have come together to promote an initiative called Active Westport. As part of this initiative Westport AC, supported by Mayo Sports Partnership, is hosting a fun 5k walk and run starting at 4.30pm on Sunday August 22 on the north Mall. The 5k event is open to people of all abilities, families, walkers, joggers, runners, and club runners This will give everyone who takes part a chance to walk, jog, or run in the beautiful grounds of Westport House. Entry to the event is just €5, with the proceeds going to Westport AC, there will be a selection of prizes for those who finish in placings and a number of spot prizes. The event is being sponsored by the West Bar and Restaurant.

Tri-burgh - the countdown is on

Louisburgh is looking forward to welcoming tri-athletes from all over the world on Saturday June 5 at 11am. Tri-burgh is in its inaugural year and is set to become a large part of Mayo’s growing sporting scene. An action packed fun day for all the family is promised with a kids’ relay race on the strand. Action will be centred at Carrowmore Strand just outside the town and there is plenty of parking for everyone at the beach.

McHugh wins inaugural Cloonacool 5k

Mayo AC's TJ McHugh won the inaugural Cloonacool GAA 5k race/walk which took place last Sunday. One hundred and twenty runners and walkers took part in this well organised event in good conditions on an out-and-back course. Results: Men 1 TJ was followed home in second place by fellow Mayo AC runner Anto Devaney with David Kearins (Sligo AC) coming third. Other Mayo AC finishers were Dave Huane in sixth place and Tom Hunt and Christy O’Malley.

Mayo athletes do well at Dublin City Marathon

Mayo AC had 17 finishers in the Dublin City Marathon, three first time marathoners, many improved times, and all enjoyed the tremendous atmosphere and fantastic Mayo support among the thousands lining the 26.2 mile route. TJ McHugh was the first Mayo AC finisher in a brilliant 2.38, and Tom Waldron brought the team home in an amazing 4.59 in his o70s category. The race incorporated the Irish Marathon Championships and results are being checked by AAI. A quick check of the overall results indicates that three Mayo AC athletes are in with chance of individual medals. The masters men's o35 and o50 teams will also be in the running.
