As the Renmore Panto prepares to see out 2012 in its usual colourful style, for the rest of Galway’s theatre community it’s time to pack away the greasepaint, well-thumbed scripts, and assorted props and costumes, and reflect upon another year of enterprising and imaginative dramatic activity. It has been a year with some indelible highlights, both from locally-based companies and visiting ensembles, and continuing displays of commitment, energy, and imagination from the city’s smaller and emergent troupes which itself merits a standing ovation given the straitened financial circumstances under which they operate.

Christmas can be an expensive time of year for everyone, especially for those of us who are studying and aren’t earning a regular income. When I was younger, I was able to get away with presenting my family their gifts without actually having to put my hand in my pocket. I relied on my sibling to buy the presents and include me as part of he ‘present ceremony’. Now that I’m older, I realise that I too have to give back in order to have a sense of giving and being independent. I’ve saved up my pocket money all year and set a challenge for myself this Christmas to shop on a budget.

Next Thursday December 8, Kieran Street in Kilkenny will host its first Christmas street party.

Mullingar Arts Centre has announced Alice in Wonderland as this year’s Christmas panto which will run from December 8-22.
