Galway Clinic awarded €8.2 million under National Treatment Fund

The Galway Clinic was awarded €8.2 million this year under the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF ).

The NTPF arranges for public patients to be treated in private hospitals, and this year four private hospital operators received over half the payments made by the fund.

The Galway Clinic was in fourth place behind the Mater Private in Dublin, which received approximately €15 million.

The Bon Secours Hosptials group picked up €13 million while the Blackrock Clinic in Dublin received €12.8 million.

The North West Independent Hospital in Derry received €1.66m last year, and BMI Healthcare in London was paid €1.36m.

The new figures make for interesting reading and show that even though less than one per cent of 32,000 patients who use the NTPF go abroad, the use of facilities outside the state made up almost five per cent of the fund’s total spend.

Mark Sheehan, Business Development Manager told the Galway Advertiser, “Financially the clinic is in a very healthy position now. We’ve been posting a profit since 2006 but it’s the policy of the shareholders that no profits are taken out of the hospital for at least the first 10 years so we have a large re-investment strategy.”

The clinic is currently seeking to finance an extension that will see two new floors, which will comprise 45 new beds and a new chemotherapy unit.
