Dance classes, talk, and films for Latin America Week

Talks, film screenings, and dance classes will take place throughout Galway city this weekend as part of Latin America Week.

Amnesty International, the Latin America Solidarity Centre, and the Galway One World Centre are holding this series of events to highlight human rights issues in Latin America.

This evening at 7.30pm in NUI, Galway’s Huston School of Film & Digital Media (across from the cathedral, beside the Fisheries Field ), there will be a screening of La Via Campesina. This film highlights the global movement of small farmers towards food sovereignty. There will be a talk on the subject by Fergal Anderson. Admission is free.

A capoeira and salsa dance class will take place outside the Pura Vida café at The Spanish Arch, tomorrow at 5.30pm. The event is free and all are welcome, regardless of ability or experience.

The main event will be a conference entitled The Links between Latin America and Ireland in The Rowing Club, Woodquay, on Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

There will be a discussion on debt issues in Latin America and Ireland from 10am to 12.30pm; a Theatre of the Oppressed workshop from 2pm to 3.30pm; and from 3.30pm until 5pm there will be a series of short films screened.

There will be Brazilian food for those who attend, and issues relating to human rights, Colombia, and food sovereignty will also be discussed. Admission is free.

Latin America Week will conclude with a salsa dancing party in The Red Square, Forster Street at 10pm. DJ Marcelo King will be giving a salsa dancing workshop accompanied by Latin American music. Admission is free.
