Inaugural Momentum wows with its scale, ambition and delivery

We knew from the outset last Friday that Momentum Festival 2026 has firmly etched its name into the cultural fabric of the west of Ireland, delivering an inaugural event that not only met expectations but surpassed them in scale, ambition, and impact.

Presented by Ireland’s newest promoters, BC Ventures, Momentum transformed Oranmore, Co. Galway into a vibrant hub of music, energy, and shared experience over the May bank holiday weekend—proving that world-class live events are no longer confined to major urban centres.

From the outset, Momentum was conceived as something more than a typical festival. Under the direction of promoters Cian Burke and Trevor Cullinane, alongside Commercial Director Olivia Breene, the event brought together a carefully curated lineup that appealed to a wide audience. Across four nights, the 4,200-capacity Crescendo Tent became the epicentre of unforgettable performances, with attendance figures reflecting the scale of its success. The Coronas drew a crowd of over 4,000 on Sunday night, while The Stunning opened the festival with an electrifying performance to 3,800 fans, elevated further by a surprise appearance from Sharon Shannon—a moment that instantly became part of local music folklore.

Beyond the headline acts, Momentum distinguished itself through its emotional depth and community spirit. A particularly poignant tribute from Steven Wall honoured the late Brian Bermingham, a visionary behind the festival’s concept, reminding attendees that this was not just an event, but the realisation of a long-held dream. Meanwhile, Momentum’s Big Day Out offered a nostalgic celebration that attracted over 2,800 people, blending international acts with homegrown favourites in a lively, inclusive atmosphere.

Crucially, the festival also championed emerging Irish talent. Monday’s lineup, featuring The Scratch, Cliffords, Madra Salach, and local openers TaLLLon and Groev, showcased the next generation of artists, reinforcing Momentum’s commitment to supporting the Irish music scene at every level. This balance between established names and rising stars created a dynamic and forward-looking programme that resonated strongly with audiences.

The impact of Momentum Festival extends beyond music. Economically and socially, it delivered a significant boost to Oranmore and the wider Galway area, drawing thousands of visitors and generating a palpable sense of pride within the community. The level of production—from lighting and visuals to real-time media coverage—set a new benchmark for regional festivals, demonstrating that excellence in live entertainment can thrive outside traditional strongholds.

Given its resounding success, the case for Momentum’s return next summer is not just compelling—it is essential. Festivals like Momentum play a vital role in decentralising Ireland’s cultural landscape, providing access to high-quality live experiences while nurturing local identity and talent. The overwhelmingly positive response from artists, audiences, and industry professionals alike signals a clear demand for its continuation.

Momentum Festival 2026 was more than a debut; it was a statement of intent. Its return next summer will not only build on this extraordinary foundation but further solidify the west of Ireland as a powerhouse for live music and cultural innovation.
