Galway Women’s U17s host Shels in league final

Galway Women’s FC play Shelbourne in the national final of the inaugural Continental Tyres U17 Women’s National League in Drom on Sunday (3pm ).

Galway secured their place after producing a comeback in the second half to overcome Limerick FC in Hogan Park in Saturday's semi-final.

Ami Karimu had opened the scoring for the hosts on 33 minutes, but Phil Trill regrouped his charges at half-time and within eight minutes of the restart Anna Fahey got on the end of a long clearance from Galway keeper Ria McPhilbin to finish calmly with her left. Then, with five minutes on the clock and extra time looking ominous, Fahey popped up again, gathering the ball on the edge of the box and firing home with her right.

Galway have already played Shels twice in the league this season, beating them home and away by the narrowest of margins on both occasions. Despite this, Shels pipped them by a point in the group stages of the league, but both sides went through to the semi-finals and emerged to do battle again this Sunday. In their semi-final they defeated Waves FC 2-0 after extra time.

A large crowd is expected in Drom on Sunday with Galway's squad drawn from clubs around the county, as well as from Clare, Mayo, Westmeath and Cavan.

Galway will also be bolstered by the returning Leah Brady, who missed the semi-final as she was away on international duty with the Republic of Ireland U19s who made it three wins from three in their UEFA qualifiers in Lithuania.
