Kinvara - as seen by Declan O’Rourke's grandfather

AN EXHIBITION of paintings, depicting life in Kinvara and south Galway in the 1930s, by Michael Killeen, the grandfather of the acclaimed singer-songwriter Declan O’Rourke, opens tomorrow.

A Distant Place - An Exhibition of the Works of Michael Killeen officially opens in The Courthouse Gallery, Kinvara, tomorrow at 6pm. It is organised by Kinvara Area Visual Arts.

At around 20 years of age in the late 1930s, Michael Killeen left Kinvara, and it is understood that he had a "tortured relationship with the town of his early years". Despite this, the Kinvara region continually inspired his art, and until his death in 1980, he created works depicting Galway hookers on the water, climín racing, and Dunguaire Castle prior to restoration. This exhibition brings artist and paintings home for the first time since their departure 82 years ago.

The exhibition runs until Saturday August 17. Gallery opening hours are 11am to 6pm daily. See .
