Ballina were made to work hard for the win, with Manulla succeeding in stifling their attempts until the 63rd minute when Ben McGarry struck and Eugene Gorman made the points safe with their second goal 12 minutes later. Ballyheane, like their opponents, have yet to taste defeat in the league this season, and picked up their second win so far to go with their three draws already in the bank with a five-goal destruction of Claremorris in Ballyheane last Sunday. Ballyheane were three goals to the good by the break with Arek Tobiaz putting the ball in the back of the Claremorris net three times inside the opening 35 minutes. Ballyheane rounded off their win with two goals in the final 20 minutes from substitutes Terry Maughan and Nobert Karo to round off another impressive performance for Ballyheane.

This weekend will see the 20th instalment of summer football kicking off across the now five divisions from Super League down to League Two. The top division features the names you would expect with Westport United once again leading the pack as defending champions, with Castlebar Celtic, Ballina Town, Iorras Aontaithe, Manulla, and Claremorris all chasing after them like last season. Making the step up from the Premier A from last year are champions Ballyheane and runners up Snugboro United. Both sides have had plenty of experience in the top division over recent years, but will be severely put to the pin of their collars this season to remain in the top division. But with two other sides in the division which can be considered local derbies, there are plenty of games where form can be put aside for a while.

Castlebar Celtic women’s side took their first footsteps at the top level of women’s soccer in the country last weekend when they kicked off their Bus Éireann Women’s National League Campaign away to Wexford Youths. The long trip to Ferrycarrig Park was worth the journey as Celtic came home with a point in the bag after a 2-2 draw. Celtic twice took the lead through star striker Emma Mullin who was played up top as a long striker for the hoops, but Wexford were able to pull a goal back each time to ensure it finished in a stalemate.
