TEDxGALWAY, a local gathering where live TED-like talks, returns to the Town Hall Theatre next week. The event’s aim is to be a shining light for all that is noteworthy, challenging, and thought-provoking in Galway.

As part of the National Heritage Week celebrations, an event is being organised in Mount Temple village on Saturday, August 26 from 2-4pm by the Mount Temple Holy Trinity Graveyard group to facilitate and showcase local heritage through the valued work being carried out by local communities groups in Mount Temple and Baylin.

The village of Knock is preparing for an influx of up to 120,000 to 150,000 people next week during the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock - which will run from Monday, August 14, to Wednesday, August 23. The annual novena at the Marian Shrine is one of the biggest events to draw people into the county each year and this year is no different. This year is the 40th year of the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock, the original intention behind the Novena was to recognise the unique role that Knock has to play in the life of the Irish church. The theme of this year's pilgrimage is 'Living Life to the Full' and there will be a number of guest speakers, and daily workshops along with services taking place over the nine days of the novena. Ceremonies will take place at 3pm and 8.30pm and workshops at 12 noon and 6pm each day.

As we enter the month of September, parents' minds may start to turn to the upcoming academic year. Many will jokingly say for a bit of peace and quiet and a return to structure, yet others will be thinking about their child's grades and how they can assist in turning that B into an A.

I was very disappointed to have missed the first Mayo Pride Parade in Castlebar on Saturday July22. I was out of the country but as soon as I got back I read the local papers' reports and contacted Mick Baynes, one of the event organisers, to get another view of what by all accounts was a well-attended day of good spirited solidarity. It is not that long ago when even the thought of such a colourful Pride parade through the county capital's streets would have met weighty and vociferous opposition.
