Both Castlebar and Ballina bowed out of the Cawley Cup last weekend at the quarter-final stage. The county town side lost out in an all Mayo clash against a Westport side who are ramping up their preparations for the Connacht Junior Cup final next weekend, while Westport lost out Monivea in Heffernan Park.

Ballina battle bravely but come up short

Despite a very brave effort in Monastery Field, Ballina came up just short on a scoreline of 12-11 against Connemara on Tuesday afternoon when they lost out to an injury time drop goal from the boot of Shane Sweeney which sealed the league title for the Gaeltacht All Blacks, but confirmed that Ballina will now have to battle for survival in Division 1A of the Connacht Junior League in the promotion/relegation play-off.

Irish favourites to dominate opening day

There are certain acres of ground which are held sacred by followers of sport in this country. For those involved with the GAA it is a few acres of land off Jones Road in Dublin 3. For those who support Soccer and Rugby, it is a patch of land adjacent to Lansdowne Road in the south of the city. On these fields heros are made. Men and women gain reputations that last a lifetime and beyond for their endeavours on these pitches.

Forget the Six Nations (sort of!) - the biggest rugby event of 2015 comes to Roscommon on April 11 at 8pm and fans of the legendary Joe Kavanagh, the greatest tight head prop in world rugby, are advised to line out early to ensure they bag the hottest tickets in town.

The first of many hard decisions for Holmes and Connolly

Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly had to make the first big decisions of their tenure as Mayo joint managers when culling the panel after a recent challenge game against Clare. The two biggest and most talked about casualties are Gavin Duffy and Enda Varley. Duffy’s inclusion in the panel last year certainly gave the county a lift with his professional athletic background and obvious experience of big match days. However as the year went on and there was no sight of him in a Mayo jersey his much anticipated return to a Mayo jersey became more of a fascination with “what was the point in having him in the panel”. I was at every Mayo match last year and on every occasion his whereabouts was discussed by media men and women from all over the country.
