Clean sweep for under-21s in qualifier against Antrim

The Kilkenny under-21 side made it a clean sweep of qualifiers for All Ireland hurling finals for the county for the second year in succession when they disposed of Antrim in Saturday’s semi-final played in Páirc Tailteann, Navan.

However John McIntyre’s evolving team has little time to enjoy Saturday’s 1-19 to 0-15 victory over Cork as they head to Semple Stadium for their next assignment, an All Ireland hurling quarter-final with Waterford, on Sunday.

•Galway ladies football junior team play Cork in the Aisling McGing semi-final on Sunday in Mallow (3pm).The junior team has already drawn with Cork earlier in the season. In camogie, Galway face Derry in Ballinasloe (2pm) on Saturday in the Gala Intermediate Championship, while in hurling the Galway intermediate hurlers play Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final at 5pm in Portlaoise.

Moran gets the nod for Royal clash

There was only one real surprise when John O'Mahony announced his starting line up for this Sunday's clash with Meath in the All-Ireland quarter-final in Croke Park. Castlebar's Barry Moran, who was expected to miss the game with a broken bone in his hand, was named at full forward. Moran, who picked up the injury in training last week, was expected to be sidelined by the hand problem for a number of weeks. But in a similar turn of events to what happened when Ronan McGarrity suffered a facial injury in a club championship match in the lead up to the Connacht final, he seems to have healed quickly enough to be given the nod.

Favourable championship draw lifts hopes on both sides of the Shannon

The televised draw for next year’s provincial championship which took place last Thursday was relatively kind to both Westmeath and Roscommon. Westmeath take on the winners of Wicklow and Carlow in a Leinster quarter-final. Louth, Longford or Kildare will provide the semi-final opposition should the Lake County win their opening game.
