Two weeks ago in this column, we showed some photographs of the Jute Spinning factory in Earl’s Island, and what I thought were large stacks of turf beside the building. An eagle eyed reader has pointed out that these were not sods of turf, they were ‘jute butts’, stems of the jute plant from which the fibres were extracted. They were stacked out in the fresh air because they are easier to work when wet. The fibres that made up the rough jute products were extracted from the top half of the plant.

Achill Island and Louisburgh have made it on to the longlist in The Irish Times’ competition The Best Place to Holiday in Ireland. It will join 23 other holiday hotspots in the race to be named as Ireland’s best place to holiday. The other finalists include Dingle, Inis Meain and The Shannon River. Every county in the country was represented in the competition, with over 1,400 entries submitted in total by members of the public. The ninth annual Heinrich Boll Memorial Weekend will take place from Friday May 3 to Sunday May 6 at the Cyril Gray Memorial Hall, Dugort, Achill. The weekend will be formally opened by Professor Enda McDonagh at 7.30pm on Friday. The weekend event will focus on the work of American painter Robert Henri, who worked on Achill 100 years ago this year.
