The Mayo footballing weekend gets under way this evening in the the old house of pain for many of the counties sides - Tuam Stadium. The old ground is getting a lick of paint and some refurbishment works at the minute and it has been the scene of many a painful defeat for Mayo teams down through the years, but for this year's crop of Mayo minors that will have little effect on them as they take their next formative steps as inter-county footballers.

A series of ‘tide markings’ have been painted on walls on parts of Galway city centre by the Extinction Rebellion group to “illustrate where the sea levels will reach” should warnings from climate scientists not be heeded.

It is "unacceptable" that Galway does not have an appropriate facility to allow for the disposal of paint, and other similar, potentially toxic waste products, and City Hall is "failing to address" this "serious environmental issue".

I always loved this time of year as a child. All winter long, the three lake boats which we had on Lough Mask would lie as part of the winter furniture — a plaything for my childhood. October to February was their hibernation, a chance for them to drip dry over the dark months, to enjoy life on land. A chance for the floorboards, probably sodden in water all summer, to dry in the shed, alongside the oars. To have a timbered chat with each other about the adventures that they'd had all year, the rocks they'd have run aground, the stories they'd have heard, the secrets shared between anglers and gillies, the dying fish which breathed last on the thin ribs beneath the floorboards.
