Augusta Lady Gregory, writer, folklorist and great patron of the arts, who died at her home at Coole Park in 1932, reappeared during the Druid production of five of her plays each evening this week. Druid is no stranger to magic, and such is their skill that Lady Gregory (Marie Mullen) makes several appearances inviting the audience to follow her for yet another of her plays performed in different locations around her home. From the edge of Coole lake to the old stables and yards, her ghostly figure seductively beckoned. The audience followed enchanted, moved by the strange power of her deceptively simple plays.

Local homeless charity Galway Simon Community is calling on people in their local community to join them in marking the organisation’s 40 years in Galway. The charity is inviting past and present clients, volunteers, staff and supporters of the organisation to join them to mark their contribution in helping to prevent thousands of people from homelessness locally. The event, Marking 40 Years of Galway Simon, a culture evening of storytelling, music and art, will take place on Thursday 17th October at 7pm in The Ardilaun Hotel in Galway.

Family events to the fore at Athlone Castle’s annual Medieval Fair

Athlone Castle will host its seventh annual Medieval Fair on August 31 and September 1. The fair takes place in collaboration with the Society for Creative Anachronism and this year will run in conjunction with the Athlone River Festival. The Athlone Castle Medieval Fair is supported by the Heritage Council and the fair is a celebration of living history, customs, pastimes, lifestyle, and entertainment.

Looking at the happy crowds in Galway for this year’s Galway Arts Festival, I can appreciate that the sense of joy and surprise is heightened because it is shared on a huge scale. The crowd itself is a key part of the attraction. People lose their inhibitions among the horde.
