The elected members of Ballina Town Council narrowly passed a revised supplementary development contribution scheme at their monthly meeting. The revised plan which saw the cost of the contribution cut from €4,500 per residential unit to €3,500 was passed by a vote of five to four in the chamber after a lengthy debate. The proposal to put the item through but with a reduced charge was made by Fianna Fáil councillor Padraig Moore, which was a counter motion to Independent councillor Mary Kelly’s proposal to shelve the item for 12 months and bring it back to the council then.

Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Deputy Dara Calleary has paid tribute to former Ballina Town Council member Sean McLoughlin who passed away at the weekend after a short illness. He was predeceased by his wife Mary.

The former Fianna Fáil mayor of Galway Martin Quinn has announced that he will not be standing as an Independent candidate in the forthcoming Local Elections and that he is quitting politics.

A Mayo county councillor has stepped down from the HSE regional west forum in protest against the removal of breast cancer surgical and diagnostic services from Mayo General Hospital. Fine Gael Councillor Patsy O’Brien, the man who topped the poll in the Claremorris electoral area and received the highest number of votes of all candidates in Mayo in the June local elections, has not sought to be re-appointed to the health forum, having served on it since its inception. Cllr O’Brien told the Mayo Advertiser that the forum was “too political” and he expressed his disappointment in Mayo’s two Fianna Fáil TDs for not ensuring the services remained.

At the February meeting of Mayo County Council, a proposal was made by the Fine Gael whip Councillor Paddy McGuinness and agreed by all parties that a meeting would be sought with the Minister for Finance to discuss the €8 million reduction in the 2009 road allocations for the county. Further to this, at the April meeting, the Cathaoirleach informed the members that the delegation would comprise representatives from each of the five counties in Connacht.
