Waiting lists soar in Mayo while Government seeks further health cuts, says Calleary

New figures published by the HSE have revealed a 17 per cent increase in the number of people on waiting lists at Mayo General Hospital. According to the figures seen by Fianna Fáil Deputy Dara Calleary, there were 850 adults and children waiting for in-patient and day case appointments at Mayo General Hospital at the end of September. That is an increase of 126 in the year.

Boost for Mayo with announcement of 150 new jobs

There was a major boost for Mayo this morning (Wednesday, November 27) with the announcement of the creation of 150 new jobs by Northgate Information Solutions in Castlebar over a three year period. The jobs will focus on Northgate’s core services including IT and transactional services, as well as document management services and an extension to the health services already in place. Mayo TD John O’Mahony this week said that he hoped that the Alchol Misuse Strategy that was published by the Government will help to tackle the unhealthy relationship that exists with alcohol and cut down on binge drinking. The second term Deputy said, “Alcohol abuse has had a pervasive effect on Irish society for decades. We can no longer afford to shrug off our bad habits as some sort of Irish-ism. While this new alcohol strategy is far from a panacea, it is a very positive first step on the road towards improving and moderating our relationship with alcohol.”
