A fundraiser spearheaded by a Co Galway woman who lost her mother to dementia has raised €4,000 for a local Alzheimer charity.

A Galway woman who spearheaded a fundraising drive for the victims of the earthquakes in Nepal visited the country recently to distribute aid.

In response to a recent story that circulated in the news that featured a husky by the name of Macari, who was the subject of horrific animal abuse when his eyes were shot with pellet guns, Carbon nightclub Galway have raised over €1,000 from their recent ‘Zoology’ fundraiser in aid of the Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA).

Plans are in place for the hosting of the annual New Inn Mummers Festival event in the local Leisure Centre on January 2 and 3. This will be the 38th annual staging of this unique festival of music, song, dance and storytelling that attracts competitors and patrons from all over the country.

Last Friday morning I was sitting in the newsroom of the Galway Advertiser when I received a phone call from a very distressed lady. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, had been in town with her elderly mother the previous day. Her mother, who was recently bereaved having lost her husband a month ago, went to the post office to withdraw her Christmas pension payment. The elderly woman lost the money at some stage on Thursday and was understandably extremely upset.

Faustina Reidy and Rose Needham are holding a pre Christmas fashion show and Christmas market in Knockranny House Hotel on Thursday November 26 at 8pm to raise funds to supply the people of Kamativi, Zimbabwe, with clean running water.

COPE Galway, a local charity providing social services in the city and county, has launched the annual COPE Galway Sleep Out where 25 of Galway’s business and community leaders will spend 12 hours on the streets of Galway to raise funds and awareness for local homelessness services.

Final preparations are being made by four Castlebar athletes who are taking part in the 2015 New York City Marathon. Lorraine Toner, John Geraghty, and husband and wife Karen and Seamus Devaney will all run the Marathon in New York on Sunday November 1 in aid of Western Care Association.

A fundraising event will take place in the Town Hall Theatre on Monday December 7 in aid of Tuam man Shane Grogan who was seriously injured in an unprovoked assault in the town three years ago.
