Two Westmeath clubs go in search of a coveted place in a Leinster final this weekend. It has been a long and successful season already for the footballers of Garrycastle and Tubberclair but, without a doubt, all of their achievements up until now will pale into insignificance should either team win this weekend.

The loyal football supporters of Connemara will descend on Tuam Stadium this Sunday at 2pm to see Naomh Anna Leitir Móir battle it out with a capable Westport side to see who will collect the Connacht Intermediate title.

To mark the close of the GAA’s 125 Celebrations, GAA players from all codes will take part in the GAA Handball Showdown at the National Handball Centre, Croke Park, this Saturday.

Shortly after the GAA was founded 125 years ago, the universities started putting out hurling and Gaelic football teams and competing against each other. These intervarsity competitions were put on a formal basis with the presentation of the Sigerson Cup for football in 1911, the Fitzgibbon Cup for hurling in 1912, and the Ashbourne Cup for camogie in 1915. Involvement in the GAA in third level institutions was a help to many students in adapting to a new life away from their homes and local clubs. It gave them a common interest with fellow students and helped the process of integration into a more diverse community.

Corofin’s manager this season, Ger Keane, has been involved with Corofin football in different capacities for the past 30 years or more.

Supermac’s, Eyre Square, will hold a collection day on Saturday, December 5 for Sports Aid. Voluntary organisation Sports Aid will pass on sports gear and equipment that is not being used. The sports gear and equipment will be passed on to those who need it but may not have the resources to purchase it themselves, including schools, sports clubs, and individuals. The collection will take place from 12.30pm with prizes and surprise guests in store on the day.

It is ironic that when the GAA headlines in the national newspapers last Sunday and Monday were all to do with the Gaelic Players Association coming under the umbrella of the larger GAA body, and how that new co-existence will be for the betterment of the county player, that the successful club players still have to get out and put on the best displays they can deliver in the height of winter.

We may still have a few weeks to wait before we reach the full height of the festive season but the football community of south Westmeath and indeed beyond will be hoping that both Garrycastle and Tubberclair can deliver an early Christmas present to the county. A Leinster title for either side would be a momentous achievement and, should they complete an unprecedented Leinster senior and intermediate club double, celebrations in south Westmeath would last well into the new year.

It is better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all. While the footballers of Garrycastle and Tubberclair will be disappointed this week to have fallen short at the final hurdle in Leinster, they can take solace in the fact that they did what very few club players ever get the chance to do - represent their club in a provincial final. In doing so they put Westmeath football back in the spotlight after an eminently forgettable year on the county scene.
