Celebrate National Burger Day with Harlowe

image preview

The burger bandwagon rolls on and on. We have seen the rise and fall of hot dogs, ribs, and burritos, but the popularity of burgers never seems to die. While we have compiled our own lists of where is best in Galway for fish and chips (Hooked), the best sandwich (Entrepans), pizza, fries, coffee, and more, for a long time even though almost every menu in town has a burger listed on it, there is none that really stands out from the crowd.

East meets West at Wa Cafe

Wa Cafe is bijou and bright, a 15 seat sushi restaurant tucked away down by the docks that was opened by Yoshimi Hayakawa on 8/8/2008. This date is no coincidence, the number eight is considered a very lucky number in Japanese culture. It was indeed lucky for us. At Wa the rice is soft, sticky, and delicious, and the food is authentically Japanese, from sushi rolls, miso soup, and bento boxes to green teas. The menu is short with a rotating choice of specials ensuring there is always something new, with a good choice for vegetarians.

Holy Guacamole

Famously, USA Presidential hopeful, Donald Trump, is no fan of anything originating from Mexico. We in Ireland, however, feel differently about this. Mexican food, one of the biggest food trends of the last decade, shows no signs of slowing down here just yet. Just a few short years ago we got what passes for Mexican food from a yellow box in the supermarket. The finished product often appeared to have already been eaten by someone else. If you attempted to make your own, shopping for chili peppers was an adventure, avocados were an oddity and tortillas were totally out of the question. Latin-American foods such as nachos, chips and salsa, fajitas, quesadillas, burritos and beans are now an everyday sight on the dinner tables of Ireland and have become as common place as bacon and cabbage.
