A short film focusing on daily exchanges between the patients and staff of the dialysis unit of Merlin Park Hospital will be screened in Galway as part of the TULCA 2010 visual arts festival.

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony, has stated that Mayo people who have to travel to Galway three times each week for dialysis treatment feel betrayed by another delay in providing this service in their own county. Deputy O’Mahony has just learned that the upgrading of the Dialysis Unit at Mayo General Hospital, which was scheduled to be completed before the end of this year, will not commence now until the first quarter of next year.

The trade union SIPTU says it remains “very worried” about 200 jobs at University and Merlin Park hospitals in the wake of a HSE proposal to suspend elective surgery, such as hip and knee replacements, and close medical wards at the Merlin Park facility.

Leading hospital consultants are urging the public to “stand up and support” Merlin Park Hospital amid fears that most of the facility will be closed down by the HSE in the next few weeks as part of cost cutting measures to help the authority balance its books.
