St Mary’s College, almost one hundred years old

image preview

Our photograph today shows the St Mary’s College hurling team which won the competition played between their school, Garbally, and St Flannan’s in 1924. The diocesan magazine The Mantle published this image and provided an update on the players in 1959, so the notes after their names describe their status in 1959.

A brilliant return to Galway for My Brilliant Divorce

image preview

There will be a homecoming in more ways than one when Jasango Theatre present a new version of Geraldine Aron’s My Brilliant Divorce on Tuesday November 1 at The Town Hall. Jasango Theatre was founded in Galway in 2009 by Jasmin Finn and Angela Ryan; they have since gone on to make a name for themselves on the national touring circuit. Following great success with Bombshells - including a two-year tour of Ireland, a summer residency at Fota House, and an American tour culminating in awards for Best Play and Best Ensemble in the 2010 Bethlehem Press Awards - Jasango are on track for another hit with this wittily observant and achingly funny play.

Pantomime fundraiser was highly enjoyable

Dear Editor,

Changing fashions, Eyre Square

image preview

There is a wonderful mix of the modern and the traditional in this photograph which was taken at the corner of Eyre Square and Rosemary Avenue in the mid 1930s. The woman in the foreground is wearing a plain black shawl, a petticoat and a ‘práiscín’ which was a heavy canvas apron worn to protect the skirt. Two others are wearing beautifully patterned shawls which must have looked very elegant and colourful. They had probably come into town to sell their wares, and then went shopping with the proceeds, and their baskets are now full. The other women in the picture are all dressed in more ‘up to date’ coats and berets. It looks as if all of these people are waiting for a bus.

Main Street parking changes could see more night-time taxi spaces for Castleebar

Castlebar town manager Seamus Granahan told the June meeting of Castlebar Town Council there are a number of parking issues on the refurbished Main Street in the town still to be finalised in the coming weeks. He said he was looking at bringing draft bye laws in relation to taxi ranks before the members in the near future.
