Students in Westmeath have entered 52 projects for next January’s BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, which is shaping up to be the biggest competition yet.

A total of 846 Westmeath students have exhibited 437 projects in the RDS over the past 49 years as part of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. The figures were revealed this week as the BT Young Scientist prepares to celebrate its 50th year.

Three Mayo schools came away with prizes from the 49th BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2013 in Dublin last Friday.

Eight schools from the Galway region represented the county at this year’s BT Young Scientist exhibition with many groups departing with prestigious awards, and among them is Edel Browne from the Presentation College in Athenry.

Colm Murray, the RTÉ sports broadcaster, was honoured on Saturday (September 15) at the 2012 Rehab People of the Year Awards “for his courageous, inspiring and moving response to a devastating diagnosis of motor neurone disease, and for his inspirational efforts in speaking out about the condition, the difficulties faced by those affected by it, and the need for a cure”, according to Angela Kerins, chief executive, Rehab, and chairperson of the adjudication committee.

The BT Travel and Accommodation Grant Scheme, created for students taking part in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, has provided financial aid totalling more than €300,000 through 834 grants to 335 schools across Ireland in the past seven years, of which schools in Mayo have received in excess of €10,000. Increased in 2012 to €75,000 per year, the BT grant is opening up the competition to a wider number of young people.

I visited the 2012 Young Scientist Exhibition last week and came across a couple of interesting projects which demonstrate that there are teenagers out there putting their brains to work in the food sector. It is only when you see that many enthusiastic kids under one roof you think, yes, perhaps we can create a bright future, but not if we lose them to foreign climes permanently.
