Mayo Sports Partnership in association with Athletics Ireland and Westport Athletic Club will continue its meet and train programme in the Westport Athletic Club facilities on Tuesdays April 14, 21, 28, and May 5 at 7.30pm. Mayo local election candidate Andy Wilson has also put his name forward as a candidate Westport Town Council. Mr Wilson said he had originally not intended to stand in the town, but had been encouraged to do so by supporters.

Iompar Maigh Eo, a newly set up sustainable transport group for Mayo, is affiliated with the National Walking and Cycling Campaign (www.cycle.ie) and developing strategies on how simple improvements can be implemented to existing roads and public transport systems to provide locals, and tourists alike, with the option of using sustainable transport in Mayo.

Preparations are well under way for the Westport Festival of Sport fun day, which is to be held in conjunction with the Gaelforce adventure race weekend Sunday August 23 on the South Mall, Westport. The event, co-ordinated by the Mayo Sports Partnership, promises to be full of fun activities such as the family sports challenge (incorporating 12 different sports), water sports, demonstrations, bouncy castle/fun inflatables, walking challenges, street orienteering, inclusive games, and the fourth annual Mayo Team Challenge.

Details have just been announced of the 2009 Mayo News/Mayo Sports Partnership Team Challenge taking place as part of the Westport Festival of Sport Fun Day on Sunday August 23 at the Mall area in Westport. The challenge is in its fourth year and the organisers, Mayo Sports Partnership co-ordinator Charlie Lambert, GMIT lecturer in outdoor education Kevin O’Callaghan, and director of Achill Outdoor Adventure Centre Tim Daly, promise a challenging event full of fun and intrigue for all.

It is a great pleasure for me as Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council on behalf of the elected members of the council to wish everyone in Westport and Mayo a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
