Time waits for no man, as the saying goes, and that definitely rings true for Pat Costello. When Kevin Reidy informed the Mayo Ladies County Board the week before last that he would be resigning his post as manager of the Mayo ladies’ senior team it left the board in somewhat of a quandary. Last Thursday night the board met to quickly appoint a new manager and they appointed Pat Costello to the post.

Mayo, as you know, start with a home game against Derry in Ballina on Sunday. While it is true that our preparations haven’t been perfect, with sloppy displays in the FBD league, preparations in the last two weeks have gone really well according to reports! Some of the ‘big guns’ were out last weekend in Kilmallock, where Cork were the opposition. Mayo scored 2-12 in that game against a full Cork outfit. The game ended in a draw and apparently it was a good workout for all concerned. Trevor Mortimer has returned to the fray after a couple of weeks sunning himself in South Africa and Ronan McGarrity was back at midfield having returned from his honeymoon. Mayo were as near full strength as possible, with only the injured Conor Mortimer not featuring as he had minor surgery on a broken nose received a week earlier. After this game and another workout on Sunday morning against a Mayo u21 selection management would more than likely have made their minds up on a starting 15 for Sunday. At the time of writing the Mayo team hasn’t yet been selected but I will be surprised if it isn’t Clarke, Vaughan, Cafferkey, Liam O’Malley, Gardiner, Cunniffe, Pat Kelly, McGarrity, Parsons, Trevor Mortimer, Dillon, Padden, Conor Mortimer, Barry Moran, and Andy Moran. If Conor Mortimer isn’t selected then I expect Mickey Sweeney might get the nod here as he scored a goal and two points from three efforts against Cork. I believe we will get our campaign off to a winning start on Sunday. Derry are missing quite a few of their stars as I believe Mark Lynch, Enda Muldoon, Niall McCusker, Kevin McCloy, Colin Devlin, and Paddy Bradley are not available on Sunday for one reason or another.

Play time will be a lot more colourful for 12 schools North and South of the border when they each benefit from a €4,600 playground makeover thanks to the Ulster Bank Supergrounds scheme. Gael Scoil Osar, Loughboy, Kilkenny, is one of six Republic of Ireland schools selected to receive a playground redevelopment.

The writing was on the wall for quite some time now, but last weekend’s home defeat to Donegal confirmed Westmeath’s return to division two of the National Football League for 2010. Meanwhile a disappointing defeat to Carlow last weekend means that our hurlers face an uphill battle to remain in division two, with two games remaining.

Not so long ago December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, a day when schools were closed, was the start of Christmas for most people. There were not the long gruelling hours of late-night shopping that are par for the course today. Perhaps in the final days before Christmas, most shops would open late; but generally in the weeks leading up to December 25, it was the normal week’s opening times. Believe it or not, everyone got their shopping done.

The beauty of the National Football League is that you can dust yourself down after a particularly bad performance and within a week or two you are presented with another opportunity to redeem yourself. I know the Mayo lads were hurting after their defeat against Derry in Ballina two weeks ago, so there shouldn’t be too much energy expended in getting their heads right for this one. I was speaking to a few of the players after the Derry game and they were understandably annoyed that they didn’t get off to a winning start.

There was much to admire about Galway’s impressive win last Saturday night over Tyrone in Healy Park Omagh. Any time you beat the current All-Ireland champions is a good evening’s work and some of the Galway players enhanced their reputations with some sterling performances.

While Mayo were busy dispensing with the paltry challenge put up by Westmeath last Sunday, the flashbulbs were frantically popping in Bellaghy as the prodigal son of Kerry football, Tadhg Kennelly, made his return to the Gaelic fields of Ireland after his nine year excursion on the fields of Australian rules. Mayo will make the 300 mile round trip from home base in McHale Park to Tralee to take on a side which has seen off Donegal, Tyrone, and Derry in their last three games, and are brimful of confidence as they try to impress Jack O’Connor who has taken over the reins of the side for the second time this year.

These are exciting days to be a student or staff member in St Paul’s in Oughterard as they face into their first ever All-Ireland final at B level this Saturday in Carrick-On-Shannon at 2pm.
