Loughrea’s second triathlon a huge success

Some 400 athletes from all over Ireland made Loughrea’s second triathlon a resounding success at the weekend.

Richardson puts in excellent performance to win triathlon

Several young KCH athletes competed in a junior triathlon in Loughrea on Sunday last. The race consisted of a 150m swim, 3km bike, and 1km run. In spite of the lashing rain all the athletes competed very well. Holly Hales was first home from the KCH contingent and excellent performances followed from Aoibhe Richardson, Aoife and Ciara Corr, Courtney Hales and Brennagh Nugent. Some of the KCH coaches and parents-Breda Hogan, Caroline Hales, and Karen Nugent- also performed well in the women’s event which consisted of a 300m swim, 6km bike, and 2km run. In the main event (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run), Niamh Richardson, Ann Corr and Brendan Nugent were the Kilkenny representatives. Niamh Richardson was first overall in the women’s race in a time of 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Three day TriFest details revealed

The organisers of the Waterways Ireland triAthlone have confirmed details of this year’s TriFest 2009 musical acts. The three day event, built around the triathlon race on July 18, promises to be the Midlands’ biggest summer festival.

•A new race on the Galway athletic calendar has been scheduled for Castledaly in south Galway on Sunday (2pm). Organised with co-operation from Craughwell AC and AAI approved, the race will be run on the Gort to Loughrea road, with race headquarters at the local St Thomas GAA Club. This race is being organised in support of AIDS Partnership with Africa, a charity with which many locals have become actively involved. Local organiser Marguerite Brady says: "We know that we're the new kids on the block, but we hope to put on a well-organised race that will be suitable for all standards of runners to enjoy. “ Online entry for the race is now open at www.RunIreland.Com.
