Castlebar Town Council management has promised to have a full report on Dunbeg estate for the next meeting of the council. A delegation of residents from the estate attended last week’s meeting of the council and outlined their concerns since the withdrawal of the agent employed by the management company in the estate, which, according to one resident, has left the residents to become accountants, solicitors, and bankers overnight as they try to run the management company.

Athlone Town Council became the latest municipal body to be disrupted by anti-austerity protestors when approximately 30 of them waited in the public gallery for nearly an hour before interrupting the monthly meeting.

The members of Ballina Town Council voted to donate the mayoral chain of the council to the Jackie Clarke Library when the council is disbanded as it is expected to be at the end of its current term next year.

Ballina Town Council will be putting new draft signage bye-laws out to public consultation in the next few weeks. Town architect, Kevin Keegan gave a presentation to the members of the council on the issue of poor and unattractive signage in the town and its surrounds and the impression it gives. Mr Keegan told the meeting that the council had problems in trying to get certain businesses to comply with the council’s requests to remove or replace poor signage as there were no bye-laws in place.

The Castlebar Tourist Office, which is operated by Castlebar Chamber of Commerce volunteers and various employment schemes in the town, will receive €5,000 funding this year from the Town Council. Cllr Ger Deere told the budget meeting of Castlebar Town Council, “This is an invaluable service that has worked very well over the last year and we should continue to support it. I just popped in there before this meeting and they had 16 people call in already today and it’s a cold wet Tuesday in January.”

Four Castlebar town councillors who did not attend any conferences in 2011, according to the latest available figures, voted against an €11,000 allocation in this year’s budget for funding attendance at conferences.
