The High Sheriff of Mayo was the British Crown’s representative in the county from the post’s creation in 1583 until the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922. In a country where ownership of land carried huge prestige, the landed had to protect what they held by securing positions of power. So it was in County Mayo that the dominant families of Browne, Bingham and Gore isolated the role of High Sheriff largely for themselves up until the 19th century at least, from which time family names such as O’Donel, Knox, Blake and others appear in the records as holders of the office.

Mayo County Council will be spending €6.5 million in repaying loans due next year, it emerged this week. Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne questioned the level of spending on loans the council would have to make next year at the October monthly meeting, when the councillors were discussing the Local Government Audit Service Statutory Audit Report for 2014.

Independent councillor Christy Hyland was elected as the Cathoirleach of the West Mayo Municipal District at the district's annual general meeting on Monday afternoon in Westport. Cllr Hyland took over the chair of the district from fellow Independent councillor Michael Holmes, who was elected last year as the first Cathoirleach of the district.

The elected members of the West Mayo Municipal District have asked Mayo County Council to obtain legal advice after a Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) work on a private road in Kilmeena had been held up, because one of the residents on the road refused to give their approval for the work to take place.
