Bulls ready to break down Monivea

image preview

It is a year of anniversaries for Westport Rugby Club, 90 years since it was founded way back in 1925 and 40 years since their last Connacht Junior Cup win back in 1975, and a victory on Sunday in the Connacht Junior Cup final would round off this year of anniversaries quite well. The odds are stacked against Westport, but that is not going to bother JP Walsh and Danny O’Toole’s charges who go into the game as underdogs with everything to gain.

Bulls double up over Ballina

image preview

In the battle of the Mayo sides in division 1a of the Connacht Junior League it was the Bulls from Westport who came out on top for the second time this season, when they faced Ballina in Carrowholly last Sunday. JP Walsh’s side ran out comfortable 16-3 winners over their north Mayo rivals thanks to a try from David Keane, with Seán Tobin kicking the other 11 points from three penalties and converting Keane’s try. Westport put themselves in front early on and went in leading 10-3 at the break thanks to Keane’s five pointer and two kicks from Tobin, Ballina responded with a penalty from James Coppens but it was the only score they would register on the day. The win sees Westport push six points in front of Ballina with three games left for each side before the end of the league season. The win also puts Westport just three points behind third placed Ballinasloe in the race for place in the Irish junior cup next year.

Understrength Buccaneers suffer disappointing home defeat

Buccaneers were especially generous leaking three tries in a 23-8 Ulster Bank League Division 1B defeat against Ballymena at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday. This win strengthened the Northerners’ promotion push as they sit in second place in the league table. It also ensured the hosts' miserable home form continues as only one win has been posted to date this season. Ironically, the Pirates have lost just once on their travels, and they stay in fifth place in the standings.
