Our Lady’s Boys’ Club

This club has been a source of guidance and inspiration to the youth of Galway, especially those of working class background, since its foundation by Fr Leonard Shiel SJ, a priest of great vision, in 1940. Indeed this wonderful structure owes a great debt to the Jesuit Order. Since the beginning the club has been based behind the Columban Hall in Sea Road. From the first nervous day of membership, right through their teens, and even in adult life, the spirit and ever watchful eye of the club is with the boys.

Mayo travels east to secure national success

Mayo Community Games is a very proud voluntary body which has made a huge contribution to the games since they were formed in 1973. Once you entered the Sports Ireland National Sports Campus in Dublin for the National Community Games May Festival it was very clear that Mayo was truly represented by the wonderful colour of flags and Mayo tracksuits everywhere. Mayo Community Games was involved in swimming, table tennis, futsal, marathon, mixed distance relay, gymnastics, quiz, and soccer. The Mayo participants' first visit to the campus yielded tremendous success with five sets of gold medals, three sets of silver, one set of bronze, and a set of fourth place medals. Eight individual medals were successfully secured with two gold, two bronze, and one fourth place making their way back to Mayo.

Mayo Sports Partnership is pleased to launch details of its upcoming Special Participation Sports Investment Scheme for 2017. The scheme, supported by Sport Ireland, invites clubs and organizations who have sport/recreation as their central focus to submit proposals which would increase participation amongst target groups such as youth at risk, disadvantaged communities, unemployed, women, travelling community, middle aged men, disabilities and ethnic minorities. This may include setting up of new clubs or additional activities which would increase participation within existing organizations.

Galwegians celebrated sporting success on the international stage with cyclist Eoghan Clifford claiming bronze at the Rio Paralympic Games this week.

Matthew brings home the medals

There was triple medal glory for Knock's Matthew McNeive at the European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships in Vantaa, Finland, recently. McNeive, who was the youngest member of an 28 strong team which took part in the games and finished in fifth position on the medals table, took home three bronze medals.

A 18-year-old Knock man will the youngest member of the Irish team that will compete in the European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships, which takes place in Vantaa, Finland, from July 10 to 17. Matthew McNieve is a kidney transplant recipient and he is the youngest member of the Irish team.
